A characteristic feature of modern silicon integrated circuit technology is its ability to operate in a stable, reliable fashion, almost indefinitely for practical purposes. Recent work demonstrates that carefully selected sets of materials and device designs enable a class of silicon electronics that has the opposite behavior -- it physically disappears in water or biofluids, in a controlled manner, at programmed times, and in an environmentally benign way. This talk summarizes recent work on this type of 'transient' electronics technology, ranging from basic studies of dissolution of the key materials, to development of components and systems with radio frequency operation, to invention of schemes for externally 'triggering' transient behavior. This seminar will be broadcast live and also archived on our website www.istc.illinois.edu for later viewing. In Honor of Sexual Assault Awarenss Month. Filmmaker Kirby Dick. The Invisible War, a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America's most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem-today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,000 violent sex crimes in the military in 2010. The Invisible War exposes the epidemic, breaking open one of the most under-reported stories of our generation, to the nation and the world. 14. The Illini Independent Film Festival is accepting submissions through March 30. The second annual festival, which ran last year under the name “Movies to the MACS,” hopes to provide student filmmakers with an opportunity to exhibit their creative visions to an appreciative audience of film lovers. While the festival focuses on local students’ work, submissions are open to anyone.

Students of MACS 464, an in-depth course on film festivals, are organizing the IIFF to showcase films created by college students in Illinois and the community members of Champaign-Urbana. "The students have looked at the history and importance of a variety of film festivals, from Cannes and Sundance to Midnight Sun and Pordenone, and the production of their own film festival allows them to apply that knowledge," said course instructor Rich Potter. The students also serve as interns for Ebertfest, the storied film festival held annually in downtown Champaign, prior to the Illini Independent Film Festival. Through their internship, students receive hands-on experience working on an established film festival.

Scheduled to take place on April 27, the festival will be a free, day-long event taking place in the Armory Theater. Featured filmmakers will be given the opportunity to discuss their work with festival-goers and with one another. Films in competition will be awarded categorical prizes based on ratings by a panel of judges drawn from the university community, as well as audience members.

    Submit a Film

Submissions can range between one and 120 minutes, with no restrictions on genre or subject. For more information, filmmakers can visit the festival website or contact Erik Scott.

  21. ECE Colloquium (ECE500): "Electronics for interacting with a physically-complex world"

Who: Prof. Naveen Verma, Princeton University
    When: 4:00pm, Apr 25, 2013
    Where: 151 Everitt Lab
    What:
Think about some of the physical systems with which we would like electronics to engage in valuable interactions: physiological systems, high-value industrial equipment, critical infrastructure.... These systems are complex, both in terms of the number of signals they present, and in terms of how those signals represent information. In this talk I will describe some of the hardware platforms we are pursuing to handle these complexities. By 'interacting with a physically-complex world', I am referring to an ability to make sense of embedded signals when in fact we may have no tractable analytical models for the underlying processes. Instead, we look at how sensor data can be used as a knowledge base, exploiting the tremendous data-acquisition capabilities of next-generation sensor networks towards the construction of high-quality data-driven models. Machine learning gives us powerful frameworks for data-driven analysis; the question is how to create very-low-power hardware to enable such frameworks in energy-constrained sensor devices. I will describe our work on low-power medical sensors for disease monitoring and harm detection. Interacting with a physically-complex world also implies the ability to acquire embedded signals on a very large scale, in fact possibly much larger than current technologies are equipped to handle. Large-area electronics is a technology that can enable the creation of large arrays of diverse transducers for sensing. To build complete systems, however, substantial embedded computation, instrumentation, and power management is also required. We focus on scalable methods for combining large-area electronics with CMOS ICs to exploit the complementary strengths of the two technologies. I will describe our work towards smart infrastructure, using flexible sensing sheets to build systems for high-resolution structural-health monitoring of bridges.

Manipulating matter at the quantum level is an exciting but challenging scientific endeavor. Quantum systems always interact with their environment, and the resulting many-body correlations destroy the quantum properties of the system. Achieving accurate control over solid-state systems involves deep understanding of the quantum many-body dynamics far from equilibrium. Besides fundamental interest, this research is important for applications ranging from quantum magnetism and nanosciences to quantum information processing.

I will present our recent work devoted to the quantum control of electronic and nuclear spins in diamond. I will describe the computational tools we have developed to treat the quantum dynamics of many spins [1], and reliably assess performance of different control approaches. These simulations guided our joint theory/experiment work towards achieving control of a single quantum spin in solid state [2] and protecting it from the environment. As a next step, the environment-protected manipulation of a two-spin system has been implemented, and first quantum computation on two individual diamond spin qubits [3] has been performed. Extending this approach to many spins in diamond, we have demonstrated nanoscale tomography with single-spin resolution [4], and a quantum operation on six coupled spins in diamond. I will discuss the possible applications of our work for nanoscale magnetic analysis, and for studying the quantum dynamics in the frustrated systems with long-range dipolar coupling.

HCI Seminar: Sep Kamvar - Three Problems in Social Computing

    Apr 30, 2013
    11:00 am
    HCI Seminar

Title: Three Problems in Social Computing Abstract: Social computing has come to refer to three things: the development of algorithms that use personal and social features, the mining of social data, and the building of systems that interact with networks of people. These three branches tend to have quite different technical challenges. I'll discuss one problem from each area to highlight both the differences and the overlap between the three branches, and I'll discuss the challenges that this new field poses to research in numerical linear algebra, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and programming languages. Bio:Sep Kamvar is the LG Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT and Director of the Social Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab. Prior to MIT, Sep was the head of personalization at Google and a consulting professor of Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of Kaltix, a personalized search company that was acquired by Google in 2003. Sep is the author of two books and over 40 technical publications in the fields of search and social computing. His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Musem in London, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens.
