Unlike all the other Bond novels, which were sold to a single company, Eon Productions, for filming, "Casino Royale" went through several producers and was made into three startlingly different films. This exhibit tells the story of these three versions, from the modest CBS-TV production in 1954, to the bizarre, psychedelic spoof of 1967, to the 'canonical' 2006 Daniel Craig version, considered one of the best Bond films.

As we are already aware, debate about the Chief continues to be present on campus and among alumni. Being that this is still an issue, Campus Spirit Revival has decided to host a forum titled 'TRADITION OR TRANSITION: A FORUM ON CHIEF ILLINIWEK' on April 16, 2013 from 5-8pm at Greg Hall 213. Here, both sides, pro and anti-Chief will be able to come together and state their reasoning behind having no mascot, having a new mascot, and bringing back the Chief. The main reason for this event is that communication between us and Stop Campus Spirit Revival and other pro-Chief individuals has been going on mainly via facebook and we have come to understand that this type of communication is fertile ground for misunderstandings, so to eliminate this barrier we have created a public forum.

With over forty years experience in advertising, Tom Burrell has built credentials on understanding how African American consumers think, feel and act. Specifically, they are concerned with evolved phenotypes that can result in human health and disease, and are most interested in the genomics of human pregnancy. Preterm birth, preeclampsia, and other obstetrical syndromes are major public health problems that result in significant morbidity and mortality to both mothers and their offspring. The growth of genomics as a discipline has enabled investigation into the genetic and epigenetic underpinnings of these poor outcomes of pregnancy. Dr. Wildman will present the perspective that a phylogenetically informed approach to the study of mammalian pregnancy elucidates the evolutionary origin of vital aspects of human pregnancy. Specifically, he will outline his own contributions to the study of the evolution of preterm birth, placentation and preeclampsia, as well as how computational genomics studies can point the way to understanding the uniquely human and evolutionarily conserved aspects of pregnancy.

Exhibit: UNCONVENTIONAL BOND: THE STRANGE LIFE OF CASINO ROYALE ON FILM
ReplyDeleteDate: Apr 16, 2013 (through Jun 16, 2013)
Time: All Day
Location: Spurlock Museum, 600 S. Gregory, Urbana
Cost: Free admission
The Spurlock Museum joins the UI's Rare Book & Manuscript Library and the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music in celebrating the 60th anniversary of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, "Casino Royale." Unlike all the other Bond novels, which were sold to a single company, Eon Productions, for filming, "Casino Royale" went through several producers and was made into three startlingly different films.

Thomas Burrell
Author of Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority
Throughout American history, mass media has been influential in contributing to the myth of Black inferiority. In addition, media content continues to be a major factor in effecting attitudes and behavior among African Americans. This presentation will show examples of how media messages utilize sensory cues that reinforce established racial bias. With over forty years experience in advertising, Tom Burrell has built credentials on understanding how African American consumers think, feel and act. Via research from his Howard University Media Messaging Research Fellowship Program and excerpts from mainstream media, Burrell offers examples on how to challenge the myth of Black inferiority.

Dr. Wildman's research group uses computational, comparative and functional genomics techniques to gain insight into the emergence of important human phenotypes.
